Save vs. Invest: Where to Spend in Your Wardrobe

Updated: 5 days ago

When building a wardrobe, deciding where to save and where to invest can make all the difference. And there is no better time to talk about this than early Spring. This is when we clear out our wardrobes and rethink our purchases, looking back at expensive things we never wore and the staples we wish weren't falling apart. So let's reflect together and make this year a little bit more fashion-conscious. Picking high-quality essentials that last longer and elevate your style, while trend-driven items can be refreshed without overspending or skipped altogether. How do you determine which pieces deserve a higher price tag and which ones you can afford to buy for less?

Where to Invest

I often try to decide which pieces are worth investing in and where to spend in my wardrobe. My personal opinion and experience timeless pieces are always worth the investment.

A timeless brown leather jacket? Yes, I’ll have that in my wardrobe for years. It doesn’t matter what’s trending at the moment—a brown leather jacket will always be stylish. Leather goods, in general, are worth the investment. A high-quality pair of leather loafers? Definitely add to your shopping list. A wool-cashmere coat? Absolutely. Cashmere and wool jumpers and cardigans, linen, and high-quality cotton pieces are also solid investments. Go for basic neutral colours—beige, black, navy. Don’t be afraid to invest in pieces like these!

My Top Investment Items

1.Outerwear A well-made coat or jacket is a long-term investment. You wear it often, and it has the power to pull an outfit together instantly. Look for classic cuts and high-quality materials like wool or structured leather. The most expensive Item in my wardrobe at the moment is a Long Cashmere Weekend Max Mara Coat that I paid $730 for and never looked back.

Massimo Dutti - Worn effect nappa leather jacket

2. Footwear Shoes take a lot of wear and tear. Investing in well-constructed leather boots or everyday sneakers means better support, longevity, and comfort. Get shoes you can take out season by season and they always look trendy. Cheap shoes often wear out quickly, leading to more frequent replacements. My recent favourite in the shoe industry is Paul Green - I have had a pair of their leather shoes for over 3 years now and I wear them religiously no matter the season still in perfect condition with the right care!

3. Handbags A structured, high-quality bag adds polish to any outfit and can last for years with proper care. Neutral colours and classic shapes ensure versatility. My sister gifted me a Coach bag for Christmas last year and  I haven't looked at a different bag since - it works with every outfit and for every occasion! It just proves that we don't need a lot!

4. Tailored Pieces Blazers, trousers, and structured dresses fit better and last longer when they’re made from quality materials. These pieces form the foundation of my wardrobe, and you only need 10 really good pieces to build it.

5. Denim There is nothing in our wardrobe that we wear more often than jeans! Don't be afraid to invest in your dream pair - A well-fitting pair of jeans holds its shape and fades beautifully over time. Higher-end denim tends to have better construction and stretch recovery, meaning you won’t have to replace them as often. Some jeans I have had for 10 years and they look like the day I got them!

Where to Save

What wouldn’t I invest big money in? Trends that are not timeless. Anything exaggerated, with a big print, big logo, or bright color, isn’t worth a major investment. If I really like a trend, I try to find a more affordable alternative instead of spending a lot on something that won’t have a permanent place in my wardrobe. This is when I love to thrift shop—I make a note of the item I’d like to find and look for it at a cheaper price. If it’s a color that’s having its moment, like burgundy last season, or a bold print like leopard, I opt for second-hand finds. That can be blended into my capsule wardrobe effortlessly.

My top Items to Save on

1. Trendy Items Fashion trends change quickly. Remember that you don't have to be on top of all of them. But if you do love something, instead of spending heavily on statement pieces that might not last more than a season, look for budget-friendly alternatives. Check websites like Vinted, Depop or your Local thrift shop - sometimes I have success checking my mum's wardrobe (she is my style icon) .

2. Seasonal Accessories Scarves, sunglasses, and costume jewelry can enhance your outfits, but trends and personal preferences shift. Save money by opting for stylish but affordable options that you are willing to change and update from season to season.

3. Occasion-Specific Clothing Dresses for weddings, holiday parties, or special events don’t see frequent wear. Instead of spending heavily, consider renting or buying secondhand! If you have friends who have a similar taste and size as you ask them - trust me, the chance is they have an amazing dress they only wore once sitting in their wardrobe. Last year I attended 6 weddings and lucky I only bought one dress before I learned my lesson.

So where to spend in Your Wardrobe?

This is only a guide - A wardrobe should reflect your style and lifestyle. Ask yourself Questions like: Do you need professional attire for work, or do you prioritize casual comfort? Do you live in a cold climate where durable outerwear is essential?

Understanding your own needs helps in making smarter financial decisions while curating a wardrobe that lasts and is a reflection of you!

Making Smart Purchases

Before investing, research brands known for quality and craftsmanship. Read reviews, check fabric content, and compare options. For pieces where you save, prioritize fit and fabric, even at a lower price point. Price dose not always mean worst quality - sometimes we get caught paying a higher price for the brand name.

What are the items in your wardrobe that have stood the test of time? Where have you found the best balance between cost and quality? Evaluating past purchases can help you refine your approach going forward.
