Spring is here, and that means one thing – spring city breaks! This is probably my favourite time of the year to travel. Being from Ireland, the weather can still be very disappointing this time of year – we’re talking jackets and raincoats in April. That’s why I absolutely love getting away to Italy or Spain. I just can't wait for summer any longer, and a quick getaway gives me that much-needed dose of vitamin D after a long, grey winter with very little exposure to sunshine (and yes, seasonal depression gets the best of us!).
The Struggle of Packing for Short Getaways
Even though I love travelling – I try to escape for a short European break 2–4 times a year – I always find packing stressful. Funny enough, the shorter the trip, the harder it is to pack. I always aim to be minimalist, yet somehow extras sneak in, and I end up bringing things I’m not even sure how I’ll style once I get there.
Worse still, I sometimes buy new items last minute – even though my wardrobe is full of amazing pieces – just to feel like I have something fresh. Most of the time, that only complicates things. I’ve ended up with mismatched outfits or no space in my bag, and it's always more hassle than it's worth.
A Smarter Way to Pack for Your Spring City Break
If only I knew then what I know now! That’s why I’m sharing my stress-free city break packing strategy with you. Let’s take the headache out of packing and actually focus on planning the fun stuff – where to eat, what to see, and what experiences we want to have!
Step 1: Do Your Research
Before I even think about packing, I do a bit of research:
Check the weather forecast about a week in advance. It’s much more accurate and gives you time to plan accordingly. I’ve made the mistake of packing for the weather I wanted, not the weather I got – never again!
Look into local customs and dress codes. Some countries are more conservative, and what’s totally normal at home might be inappropriate elsewhere (think: overexposed skin in religious areas). Being respectful and aware of what’s acceptable in your destination is always a good idea.
Plan your activities. Will you be walking 20k steps a day, eating out at cute restaurants, exploring museums, or dancing the night away? Make a list of what you’re doing each day – this will help you decide how many outfits you actually need.
Step 2: Pull From Your Wardrobe First
Once you know your destination, weather, and activities, it’s time to dive into your own wardrobe. Start by pulling out:
Pieces that are comfortable
Items that suit the climate and the local culture
Outfits you know you feel confident and put-together in
Create a Mood Board

Here’s a bonus tip I swear by – create a mood board.
Hop onto Pinterest and type in “city break outfits”.
You can go super specific – search “white shirt outfit inspo” if you’re unsure how to style something you already own, or “Italy city break outfit ideas” to get a feel for the local vibe.
Save your favourite looks and build your own mini-mood board.
This gives you visual clarity and helps you stick to a particular aesthetic when picking your outfits.
Stick to One Aesthetic or Colour Story
Decide on one theme or palette for your looks. Whether it’s black and white, all-neutrals, or beige tones, keeping things within one colour story makes mixing and matching so much easier. It helps your wardrobe feel cohesive, even if you’re only packing a handful of items.
Step 3: Only Shop If You Truly Need To
If you notice that some of your basics are a little worn – like a stretched-out white tee or jeans that don’t fit anymore – then it’s totally fine to invest in a few wardrobe essentials.
But don’t fall into the trap of panic-buying a whole new wardrobe for a 3-day trip. Avoid one-off pieces that you’ll only wear once. Buy intentionally, with versatility in mind.
Step 4: Curate and Style Your Outfits
Once you've pulled your pieces, lay everything out. This is where the real magic happens.
I like to stick to about 11 items – trust me, it’s enough! They usually fit in my backpack, which means I can skip the suitcase altogether. And yes, I’ve definitely started travelling with hand luggage only since adopting this strategy.
Start creating outfit combinations from the items you’ve picked.
Try on every look and ask yourself: Does this make me feel excited to wear it?
If the answer is no, leave it out. You likely won’t wear it when you're away either.
Take Outfit Photos
Take a quick photo of each outfit combo you try on. At the end, go through your photos and only keep the outfits you really love.
This gives you a clear outfit plan and saves so much time (and stress) when you’re getting ready on your trip.

Step 5: Don’t Forget Accessories
Accessories are game changers. They take up barely any space and can completely transform a look.
A scarf can be styled as a top, a headband, or tied to your bag.
Statement earrings instantly elevate a simple outfit.
Sunglasses, belts, bold lips – they’re lightweight and powerful tools for styling.
Pack 2–3 key accessories and mix them across your looks to add variety without the bulk.
